We all desire straight teeth, but that is not always the case. You may have a bad bite, teeth that are crooked, misaligned, or crowding. Orthodontics solve that problem, but afterward you may need some help in maintaining the results that our Queens orthodontist, Dr. Rekha Gehani has been able to achieve for you. You may wind up needing to wear a retainer for a while after your braces come off in order to keep your teeth straight. Made of molded plastic along with wire, a retainer is easier to wear and less cumbersome than braces. Where your braces were designed to slowly move your teeth into a proper position, your retainer works to keep them there during the crucial period between taking the braces of and going without any outside support at all.

The process of straightening teeth through the use of orthodontics takes patience. Typically, 1 to 3 years are required to see complete results. While this may seem like a long time, when you consider the problems and complications that can occur from misaligned or crooked teeth, then the benefits of orthodontics are quite clear. When your teeth are not straight, many people feel self-conscious about smiling. It is easy to become dissatisfied with your appearance. But cosmetic concerns are only a part of the reason to seek out our Queens orthodontist. The other part is practical. Teeth that are not properly aligned and straight can cause discomfort or even pain in your jaws. Furthermore, because misaligned teeth may be challenging to brush properly and to floss between, you become more susceptible to eventual tooth decay, cavities, root canals, and even the need for an extraction because thorough dental hygiene is difficult to manage.

After the goal of properly aligning your teeth has been reached, our Queens orthodontist wants to ensure that you maintain the advantages of all the time and work that went into getting them that way. With a retainer, your teeth have the opportunity to be free of the braces but still have a level of support that greatly increases the chances they will remain in position.

Tips for Living with Braces

Tips for Living with Braces

For the basics, our local Queens orthodontist suggests that our patients wearing braces avoid chewy, crunchy, sticky and harder foods that may cause problems with your braces. Although this seems like a large number of food types, it’s only temporary and you can return to eating all the foods you like when you get your braces off. If you’re experiencing any soreness caused from your braces, rinse your mouth with a teaspoon of salt mixed with 8 ounces of warm water. When your braces are adjusted regularly, you may feel some discomfort and if the salt water rinse doesn’t help you can take some ibuprofen according to label directions. Braces should also be protected when playing sports so you should definitely wear a protective mouth guard to avoid damage or injury to your mouth.

Our local Queens orthodontist, Dr. Gehani knows that your lips, cheeks and tongue can also become irritated for a week or two until they toughen up and become accustomed to your braces. We have a special wax that can be applied to your braces that will alleviate the discomfort. Dr. Gehani wants to be sure that you’re aware that your teeth may loosen during treatment. This is nothing to be concerned with since teeth must loosen first so they can be moved. When you’re teeth are in their corrected, new position they will become rigidly fixed and you will have the beautiful smile you deserve.
