Many patients have orthodontic work performed when they are in their teens. Today it is recommended that all children come in to see our orthodontist in Elmhurst for an orthodontic evaluation around the age of seven. If it is determined that certain orthodontic problems are developing, it will be recommended that your child receives interceptive orthodontic treatment. This means that your child will have certain treatment between the ages of seven and 11; he or she will then will go on to receive additional orthodontic care when they are in their teens. This type of phased orthodontic treatment generally results in the teen patient needing less costly and less involved orthodontic care. Generally there is also much less of a need for tooth extractions for teens who are having orthodontic work. When young patients have Phase 1 orthodontic care, they often have treatment which will expand the size of their jaw. This ensures that there will be room for all the teeth to come in, and that there is much less chance of the mouth becoming overcrowded.

When these patients are in their teens, they then receive their Phase 2 orthodontic care. Teens who did not receive any Phase 1 orthodontic care are also treated at our office. Teen orthodontic care often uses braces to correct a bad bite. A teens teeth may be crowded or crooked, or their upper and low jaws may be out of alignment. The goal of orthodontic treatment is not only to create a smile for the patient that is attractive, but to help the patient develop a bite which will allow them to have a healthy mouth. If teeth are allowed to be crooked or crowded, they can be more difficult to keep healthy over time. Both braces and retainers can be used to slowly move teeth into their proper positions. Retainers are also used to help teeth remain in their new positions once braces have been permanently removed.
